Not enough people have heard of Soul City. That's exactly why this shirt exists.
In 1969, civil rights leader Floyd McKissick announced he would build a new city in Warren County, North Carolina — built and owned by Black people. His dream: a brand-new city of 50,000 people on a former slave plantation in rural North Carolina — designed, built, and governed by Black residents, complete with free public transportation, 24,000 new jobs, abundant housing, and an integrated population engaged in a progressive model of civic cooperation.
McKissick believed that economic power was the first step to political freedom. Soul City was his proof of concept — and the world wasn't ready for it.
